Ana Kai Tangata Cave is located just south-west of Hanga Roa, between the main town of Hanga Roa and the village of Orongo.
The name Ana Kai Tangata literally means "Man Eating Cave", but it could be interpreted to mean: "the cave where men eat" or "the cave where men are eaten". The cave is located along the island's rocky volcanic coastline. The most notable thing to see in the cave are paintings of migratory sea birds - namely the "manutara" or sooty tern. The manutara played a huge role in the lore of the Birdman cult of Easter Island.
Paintings decorate the walls of the cave and many tourists visit it, since it's so close to the town.
